Radio Jets in Cooling Cores

چکیده

Almost every strong cooling core contains an active radio galaxy. Combined radio and X-ray images reveal the dramatic interaction which is taking place between the radio jet and the central cluster plasma. At least two important questions can in principle be answered by comparing the new data to theoretical models. The first is how the radio jet propagates, and disrupts, in the cooling core environment: why are these clustercenter radio sources unusual? The second is the effect the radio jet has on the cooling core: is it energetically important to the core? Thanks to the new data we are beginning to be able to answer these questions.

The effect of mixing on metallicity gradients in the

It is generally argued that most clusters of galaxies host cooling flows in which radiative cooling in the centre causes a slow inflow. However, recent observations by Chandra and XMM conflict with the predicted cooling flow rates. It has been suggested that radio jets that are situated at the centre of clusters of galaxies can assist in reducing the deposition of cold gas. Radio jets inflate c...

finds X - ray jets are common in low - power radio galaxies

We present results for the first three low-power radio galaxies from the B2 bright sample to have been observed with Chandra. Two have kpc-scale radio jets, and in both Chan-dra resolves jet X-ray emission, and detects soft X-ray core emission and an X-ray emitting galaxy-scale atmosphere of luminosity a few 10 41 ergs s −1. These are the first detections of X-ray jets in low-power radio galaxi...

Relativistic Jets in Radio - Weak Quasars

We discuss radio observations of a sample of radio-weak and radio-intermediate quasars which demonstrate that { just like their radio-loud counterparts { radio-weak quasars too have relativistic jets in their nuclei. Moreover, a VLA survey of nearby LINER galaxies reveals a relatively large number of at-spectrum radio cores. It is suggested that those cores are also best explained by moderately...

Relativistic Jets in Radio-Weak Quasars and LINER Galaxies

We discuss radio observations of a sample of radio-weak and radio-intermediate quasars which demonstrate that – just like their radio-loud counterparts – radioweak quasars too have relativistic jets in their nuclei. Moreover, a VLA survey of nearby LINER galaxies reveals a relatively large number of flat-spectrum radio cores. It is suggested that those cores are also best explained by moderatel...

Jets in AGN – New Results from HST and VLA

This paper summarizes some of our recent projects which try to illuminate the nature and importance of jets associated with active nuclei and compact objects. After a short introduction on jets in radio galaxies and radio loud quasars the paper focuses on jets in other source types, such as radio-quiet quasars, Seyfert and LINER galaxies, and stellar mass black holes. Radio observations of quas...
